The Guitar Community Is Sleeping on This Underrated '90s Rock Album (and Everyone Is Missing Out)
This alternative rock record is one of the most overlooked gems of the decade.
This album really encompasses such a wide range of sounds, topics, and performances that are all representative of the diverse rock scenes that bloomed in the '90s. As I highlighted above, punk, grunge, alternative, indie, and even some industrial sounds are all over this record. And it's not derivative. It came out in the midst of these movements, in 1994, as Live was a true contemporary of many of the bands I've listed in this article. I don't point to those bands to suggest Live is copying them or riding their coattails. Quite the opposite.
Live and "Throwing Copper" sound so familiar because it is such a staple piece of work from this time period. In fact, many of the bands and movements that would follow the grunge and punk explosion of 1994 were influenced by Live. This album perfectly demonstrates the wide variety of genres and styles that were mixing and matching in the '90s as the alternative rock genre ballooned.
However, this album is rarely discussed online amongst its peers. Iconic '90s albums like "Dookie", "Vitology", "Superunknown", and "No Need To Argue" were all released in '94 alongside "Throwing Copper". In my opinion, this album should be held up alongside those and other early '90s classics in the public discourse.
